The moment the farmers were waiting for arrived at about 3 PM on Monday, 10 June. The chaotic crowd of farmers advanced onto the field in waves, jabbing reddish-brown, fungicide-coated seeds into black cotton soil, along rows of drip pipes laid uniformly apart.

These were moments to be captured on camera, but the farmers were untrained in the art of posing. As they surged, the photographers retreated, their drives in high-speed continuous-mode to catch their raw-energy defiance of the law even in 43 degrees Celsius. The slogans said why:

Chor Bt nahin, hakkache Bt

(Not by stealth, Bt by right)

Azadi, azadi, tantragyaan ki azadi

(Freedom, freedom, freedom of technology)

Tantragyaan swatantra amchya hakkachi, nahin kunyacha bapache

(Technology freedom is our right, not anybody’s patrimony).

Chor Bt nahin, Imandaar Bt

(Honest Bt, not stolen Bt).
