A video showing a mob vandalising a house is going viral on social media to claim that Dalit families were attacked by Muslims recently in West Bengal.

In the video, a photograph of Dr BR Ambedkar is also visible on the wall.

(Archives of similar claims can be seen here and here.)

How did we find out the truth?: We performed a reverse image search on some of the keyframes of the viral video which led us to a post shared by Bahujan Samaj Party National Coordinator and Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Gautam.

  • This was shared on X (formerly Twitter) on 7 March 2025.

  • He shared the same video in the post and stated that this video is from Baktara village of Sehore district in Madhya Pradesh.

  • He also added that it shows a mob attacking Dalit homes while the police allegedly watched and did not stop the violence.

  • Taking a cue, we performed a relevant keyword search on Google which led us to a video report shared by Zee News on 7 March 2025.

  • It carried the same viral video and mentioned that a violent clash broke out between the Dalit and Kirar communities in Baktara village of Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh.

  • This was followed by the murder of Bablesh Chauhan, a member of the Kirar community. Several locations in the village were also set on fire and it led to a social boycott against the Dalit community.

It was also covered by NDTV and Aaj Tak.

Conclusion: An old video from Madhya Pradesh is being falsely shared as one from West Bengal with a communal twist.
