(Note: We have refrained from adding links to the post due to the graphic nature of the visuals.)

Is it true?: No, the claim is false.

  • The video is from Bangladesh's Dhaka and shows a mob lynching a rape accused teenager.

How did we find out the truth?: We carried out a reverse image search using Google Lens, which led us to a Facebook post with the same video.

  • Its caption mentioned that it showed a boy being tortured in Bangladesh.

  • Taking a cue from this, we used Bangla keywords such as 'বাংলাদেশের জনতা' (Bangladesh mob) to supplement the reverse image search to look for more information.

  • The search returned several results, including a report by Bangladeshi news outlet Somoy News, which carried a screenshot of the graphic video.

  • Published on 19 March, the report said that a mob had broken into a police car which was transporting a man accused of raping a five-year-old, brutally thrashing him.

  • The "angry mob vandalised and robbed a police vehicle," the report said, leaving some policemen injured.

  • The accused, a teenager, was arrested from Dhaka's Khilkhet neighbourhood, after which he was snatched and lynched by the mob.

  • We also found similar visuals in another report by news organisation Ekushey Television.

  • After the attack, the teen was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, as per The Business Standard.

  • The attack left the accused in a critical condition, reported Dhaka Tribune.

Conclusion: A video of a mob lynching a person accused of rape in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is being shared as one from West Bengal with a false communal claim.
