A video showing men in uniform breaking into a house and detaining multiple individuals is being shared on social media platforms.
Later in the video, they are presented with a significant number of weapons placed in front of them.
The claim: Those sharing have claimed that it shows Indian soldiers arresting people involved in violence, riots and misbehaviour with women in West Bengal.
(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)
Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false. The video originates from Bangladesh and is from 2024.
It shows an incident where the army captured seven individuals and confiscated two foreign and local firearms in a raid at Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur.
What we found: At first, we divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
We found a report by the Business Standard from October 2024. It carried a similar frame as the viral video.
The report stated that the Daring Tigers Unit of the 23 East Bengal Regiment of the Bangladesh Army had arrested seven people and confiscated two foreign revolvers along with local arms during a raid at the Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur on 28 October 2024.
As per a report by the Daily Star, a leading newspaper from Bangladesh, an army raid on Geneva Camp resulted in the arrest of seven suspects, including a known drug dealer, and the seizure of firearms and ammunition.
It also noted that the police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) operations led to additional arrests across the area.
More context: In response to public demonstrations demanding improved security, two temporary police outposts were established within Geneva Camp.
The surge in criminal activities, particularly involving teen gangs, has been attributed to the power vacuum following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, noted the Daily Star.
Conclusion: A video from Bangladesh has gone viral as one from West Bengal with a false claim.
