A video showing a few deer strolling along a road at night is being shared on social media, claiming that it reflects the consequences of land clearing in Kancha Gachibowli in Hyderabad, Telangana.
The video displays the message, "Revanth Reddy's Destruction of HCU's Green Cover- Animals in Danger!"
What we found: We divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
The results led us to a Facebook post that shared the same video on 27 March 2020.
The clip was posted with the remark, "Gorgeous!" A group of Sambars walks along the road in Haridwar during the lockdown! As people withdraw to their houses, wildlife explores outdoors even in India! A positive indication of an effective curfew is having wild animals on the streets! "Great job, Haridwar!" (sic.)
Another Facebook post shared in March 2020 had the caption, "Last night in Shivalik Nagar, Haridwar."
A news report from India Today dated 27 March 2020 also noted that the viral video came from Haridwar in Uttarakhand.
The report mentions that the footage of Sambar deer wandering at night was posted by Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda. The report carried the link to the post.
Posting the video on X in March 2020, Nanda stated, "Now Spotted deer herds on the road. Sender says that it’s near Rajaji National park. Wildlife really claiming their space (For some Cynical about WL reclaiming it’s area on my earlier posts-This is a recent video. Effects of lockdown. Not fake)." (sic.)
Conclusion: This video showing a herd of deer wandering on roads has been falsely shared as a result of the destruction in the Kancha Gachibowli area. The video is from Haridwar from 2020.
