A video of West Bengal's Leader of the Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari speaking at a public event is being shared on social media.

What is he saying?: In the clip, Adhikari said, "BJP will not remain here. Leave your BJP attitude. Come to the streets. What is the BJP doing? The BJP is chasing everyone out and calling them Bangladeshi."

  • Those sharing the video claimed that it shows Adhikari criticising his own party, the BJP.

Among other social media users, the clip was also shared by All India Trinamool Congress' (AITC) State General Secretary for IT and Social Media, Nilanjan Das on X, where it gathered over 97,000 views at the time of writing this report.

But...?: The clip is being shared without its original context, making the claim misleading.

  • It is taken from Adhikari's recent speech on 17 August in Taratala, Kolkata, where he was referring to the AITC's narrative against BJP in West Bengal.

How do we know?: We ran a reverse image search on the video using Google Lens, which led us to an Instagram post by Asianet News Bangla showing similar visuals.

  • The location stamp and the caption of the video, shared on 18 August in Bangla, mentioned that it was taken in Kolkata's Taratala.

Adding the location to our search led us to the livestreamed version of the speech on Asianet News Bangla's YouTube channel.

  • While speaking at the event in Taratala in Bangla and Hindi, Adhikari touched upon local issues about corruption and women's safety under the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's AITC government in the state.

  • Around the 10:09-minute mark of this video, he started talking about the AITC's remarks and stance about the BJP in the state, which include the remarks heard in the claim.

"What did they say here? They said, we will remove BJP entirely. BJP will not remain here. Leave this attitude, this BJP attitude. Come to the streets, what is the BJP doing? BJP is chasing everyone out, calling everyone Bangladeshi. Oh brother no, listen clearly. On 15 August, Independence Day, our Prime Minister said clearly from the Red Fort, no country in the world has infiltrators, and our country will not have infiltrators. What are you scared of?"

  • Adhikari then goes on to talk about how the BJP's leaders have reiterated in a "crystal clear" manner that whoever is Indian — be it Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, or Buddhist — has nothing to do about the Special Intensive Revision of the voter list in West Bengal.

  • "Not only Bharatiya, whoever has left Bangladesh and come to West Bengal to protect their religion is not called an infiltrator. They are our friends, relatives, refugees," he said.

  • The same, long version of Adhikari's speech was also shared on his Facebook page, as well as the BJP's X account.

Conclusion: A clipped video of BJP's Suvendu Adhikari is being shared to falsely claim that he criticised the BJP during a speech.
