A video of police personnel beating several people on the streets is being circulated on social media platforms as recent visuals from an incident in Uttar Pradesh.
What's the claim?: An X (formerly Twitter) handle shared the clip with a caption in Hindi that loosely translated to, "These red caps tried making it like Nepal, see yourself what happened to them".
How did we find that out?: A simple Google Lens search on the keyframes of the viral video directed us to the same visuals uploaded on the official YouTube channel of Mojo Story.
It was shared on 4 July 2021 with a title that said, "UP Panchayat Polls | Protesting Samajwadi Party Workers Lathicharged By Police In Prayagraj."
News reports: A report published by Hindustan Times said that the SP alleged that the police lathi-charged in most districts of the state, when the district panchayat chairpersons' polls were being conducted.
Former Akhilesh Yadav had accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in malpractices to win the elections.
A recurring theme: Team WebQoof had previously debunked the same video in June 2022, when it was falsely linked to the Gyanvapi mosque land dispute case. You can read our older fact-check here.
Conclusion: Evidently, the video is old and is being shared on the internet with an incorrect context.
