A video is going viral online showing a mob dragging a woman out of a shop and then attempting to kidnap her by pushing her into a car.
The claim with the video states that a Pakistani woman was assaulted after she was asked for 'proof of strikes on India'.
What's the truth?: This video shows an attempt to kidnap a transgender person in Vehari, Pakistan and the claim made here is false.
How did we find out the truth?: We reached out to Lubna Jerar Naqvi, a fact-checker and a journalist from Pakistan who told us that this claim is false.
"This is a video of an incident of a transwoman beaten up. Not of a woman beaten asking for proof of strikes," she added.
She further stated that this video is from Vehari, city in Pakistani Punjab.
She also sent us a link to original X (formerly Twitter) post carrying this video.
The caption stated in Urdu, "Influential people in Vehari tortured and beat a transgender woman in public. Attempted to kidnap her in a car. The transgender woman escaped from the car with great difficulty. The people around her watched the spectacle."
Taking a cue, we performed a relevant keyword search on Google and this led us to a news report shared by Pakistan's The Express Tribune which was published on 29 April 2025.
It stated that following the video going viral online, Vehari police arrested the suspects Atif and Imran from Hasilpur and Tahir Javed from Arifwala.
According to police officials the mob had "tortured the transgender person in public, cut her hair and tried to kidnap her in a car" on 23 April 2025.
