A video showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi being ignored while extending his hand to shake hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping is going viral on social media as one from the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China.
What we found: At first, we divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
It led us to a report by Bloomberg from October 2024 stating India and China's relations before the then United States Presidential elections at the BRICS conference in Kazan, Russia.
It included a longer version of the viral video in which the two can be seen shaking hands and greeting each other in front of their respective country’s national flag.
We, then, ran a relevant keyword search which led us to the longer version of PM Modi and the Chinese President’s meeting.
This was posted on 23 October 2024 on the official YouTube channel of ANI News.
Its title noted, "Historic handshake: PM Modi holds meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at BRICS Summit" (sic.)
It can be clearly seen that both leaders shook hands in front of their respective country’s national flag.
SCO in Tianjin: An easing of India and China relations at the SCO Summit was highlighted by PM Modi's first trip to China in seven years and his discussion with President Jinping.
The discussions reportedly indicated potential for stronger trade and investment connections, enhanced border stability, restarted direct flights, and cultural collaboration such as the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, reported Mint.
Several visuals have gone viral showing world leaders including PM Modi, President Jinping along with Russian President Vladimir Putin sharing lighter and informal moments at the summit in Tianjin.
Team WebQoof debunked the viral video in 2024 when it was being shared with a similar claim during the BRICS conference. You can read the story here.
Conclusion: An old, clipped video from 2024 is being shared to falsely claim that President Jinping ignored PM Modi at the SCO summit in China, recently.
