A screenshot of an article, purportedly published by English daily Hindustan Times, which allegedly carries a statement by Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, is being shared on social media.

The claim: The screenshot is being shared to claim that Murthy advocated for “limited interaction between young girls and boys for success”.

(Archives of more claims on social media can be seen here and here.)

Is it true?: No. Neither did Hindustan Times publish such an article, neither is there any evidence to support the claim that Murthy made the statement in question.

How did we find out the truth?: We ran a keyword search using the term 'Narayana Murthy limited interaction young girls boys' to look for article in question.

  • Instead, we came across an X post by Hindustan Times' official account, which clarified that the the screenshot "is photoshopped and the story is fake."

  • It added that their legal team would take action against those responsible for creating and spreading misinformation.

We also noticed a discrepancy in this fake article, which did not carry a date and time stamp in the area where Hindustan Times' articles generally display them.

Conclusion: The viral screenshot carrying a statement about having limited interaction between young girls and boys separate is fake.
