Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the Maldives, a photo featuring PM Modi on the wall of the Maldives' Defence Ministry, with the word "surrender" written above it, has gone viral on social media.

(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false as the image is altered.

  • The original one shows PM Modi's poster on the building without the word 'surrender'.

What we found: At first, we ran a Google reverse image search but we did not find any credible reports or information to prove the claim.

  • The results led us to an Instagram post by My Gov India from 26 July. It featured a similar image but did NOT have the word 'surrender,' as shown in the viral photo.

  • It noted, "PM Modi on the Maldives skyline. PM Modi’s portrait graces the Maldives Defence Ministry, a powerful symbol of India–Maldives friendship and mutual respect." (sic.)

  • We also found other sources which featured the original photo. News agency ANI and publication DD News Live also posted about PM Modi's poster on the building in Maldives.

  • The official X account of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) posted multiple pictures from PM Modi's trip, including one featuring the same structure with his portrait.

  • The post, "His Excellency Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed by His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu

at Republic Square, where he was honoured with a Guard of Honor by MNDF on his state visit to Maldives." (sic.)

  • We went through the press releases by the Press Information Bureau and the Ministry of External Affairs (MeA).

  • A note from 25 July noted that PM Modi and Maldivian President Muizzu officially inaugurated the new, modern Ministry of Defence building in Male.

  • The building overlooked the Indian Ocean and the eleven-story building represented the robust defence and security alliance between India and the Maldives.

Conclusion: An altered image of PM Modi's portrait on a building with the word 'surrender' on it has gone viral as real on social media.
