A video featuring what appears to be a news bulletin with two windows, one showing Pakistan’s former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the other of Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, is going viral on social media.

Both politicians can be heard speaking about the recent armed conflict between India and Pakistan.

What did Bhutto say?: "Who attacks in the dark of the night? We can call our propaganda in their (India) parliament in front of the Prime Minister of India. Who attacks in the dark of the night? Our people are sitting in his parliament."

What did Gogoi say?: "Five to six jets have fallen. Each jet is worth crores and crores, billions and billions of rupees. Millions and millions of rupees. That's why we want to know. Today, we want to know clearly from Rajnath Singh ji how many jets have fallen. We have that courage."

Who shared it?: On 2 August, the Minister of Minority Affairs of India, Kiren Rijiju, wrote on his official X page, "Why did a Pakistani politician say, our People are sitting in India's Parliament?" (sic.)

(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

  • Bhutto's clip has been digitally manipulated. In his original speech , there is no mention of "their people" inside India's parliament.

  • On the other hand, Gogoi's video has been presented out of context. In his original speech, he spoke of the President of United States of America, Donald Trump's claims about India's loss of assets against Pakistan.

What we found: We checked both the videos separately and found the following.

Bhutto's clip: We divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.

  • We came across his address on Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) official Facebook page. It was uploaded on 7 May.

  • Bhutto spoke about India's Operation Sindoor which targeted some terror bases in certain areas of Pakistan on 7 May.

  • In his address, he questioned India and asked, "Who attacks at night?" and noted that "It is thieves who behave in such a manner."

  • Bhutto also lauded Pakistan's armed forces and claimed that they shot down five Indian jets in the process.

  • However, there was no mention of 'their people' sitting inside India's parliament.

Discrepancies in the viral video: When we looked at the viral clip closely, we found that the lip movement did not match with the audio.

  • We, then, checked the video on Contrails AI, a Bengaluru-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup working on detecting AI-generated content.

  • The report noted that the audio appeared to be a partial spoof and it was AI-generated using voice cloning technique.

Analysis by Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU): DAU's report revealed that it was apparent from the video track that Bhutto's lip movements do not match the audio that is purportedly shown to be his.

  • However, AI-detection tools such as Hiya AI and ElevenLabs speech classifier did not find the presence of AI in the clip.

  • Additionally, the report mentioned that the presence of music in audio tracks is done to prevent proper detection of AI in audio.

Gogoi's clip: We looked up Gogoi's speech on Sansad TV's YouTube channel and found his video from 28 July.

  • We went through the entire speech and tried to find the portions said in the viral video.

  • Team WebQoof found that 20:24 minutes onwards, Gogoi made some comments about jets lost in combat against Pakistan.

Here's what he said:

"Today, President Trump himself says that 5-6 jets have fallen. Each and every jet is worth billions of rupees. Millions and millions. That is why we want to know.Today, we want to know clearly, Rajnath Singh ji. We want to trust the country. The country has the courage to hear the truth.Today, you tell me how many jets have fallen. We have that courage because this news, it is the truth not only for the citizens of the country. This truth we have to give to the soldiers of the country."
  • The viral clip has skipped the part where Gogoi attributed the claim about jets losses to President Trump, making his viral clip misleading.

Conclusion: Bhutto's video has been manipulated to falsely suggest he said that "their people" are sitting inside India's Parliament. Meanwhile, Gogoi's clip has been shared in a misleading way by omitting the portion where he attributes the claim about lost jets to President Trump.
