India had summoned the Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Sohail Mahmood, on 15 February and issued a very strong demarche over the killing of the CRPF jawans. In a tit-for-tat move, Pakistan also summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad and lodged a protest against India's allegation of its role in the Pulwama terror attack.

Pakistan's decision to recall its envoy came on a day when two Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists, including one believed to be the mastermind behind the Pulwama attack, were gunned down in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. Four Army men, including a Major, were also killed in the encounter that broke out in the early hours of the day.
