Following a directive from the Home Ministry, Mumbai Police, on Thursday, 5 July arrested a man in Ahmedabad who gave rape threats to Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi and her daughter on Twitter, PTI reported.

The arrest comes two days after the Union Home Ministry directed the Mumbai Police to register a case against Twitter user Girish Maheshwari for the rape threats, whose handle was @GirishK1605. The ministry had also asked the micro-blogging site to present details of the user.

Chaturvedi took to Twitter to thank the Mumbai and Delhi police teams for taking the necessary action and also expressed her gratitude to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his ministry for paying heed to her complaint.

Chaturvedi had approached the police with a complaint on Monday, 2 July, after a fake quote attributed to her supporting the Mandsaur rapist Irfan was circulated on social media.

The tweet, which was deleted later, claimed that the Congress spokesperson said, “Only one rape has been committed in Mandsaur. It is the right of Muslims to rape. Our party is with Irfan (the rapist).”

The tweet also called for the rape of Chaturtvedi’s 10-year-old daughter.

“Priyanka I want to rape your daughter. Send your daughter to me,” was the tweet by @GirishK1605.

Congress leader Priyanka Chaturvedi had approached the police with a complaint on Monday, 2 July.

The Congress spokesperson mentioned in her complaint that despite using an image of Lord Ram in the profile picture, the Twitter troll didn't even think twice before making such a threat.

Maheshwari, a resident of Mumbai, was arrested from Ahmedabad by a joint team of Mumbai and Delhi Police.
