Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti said on Tuesday, 7 September, that she has been placed under house arrest, as she slammed the union government for willfully denying rights to the Kashmiris.
"GOI expresses concern for the rights of Afghan people but wilfully denies the same to Kashmiris. Ive been placed under house arrest today because according to admin the situation is far from normal in Kashmir. This exposes their fake claims of normalcy [sic]," Mufti tweeted.
Her tweet came soon after the Jammu and Kashmir Police said that most of the restrictions in the union territory have been eased, including the internet, and that the situation is "fully normal", but under "close watch".
This comes after restrictions were placed in the union territory in the wake of the passing away of Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on 1 September.
Kashmir Tense
The valley has been tense ever since Geelani's death on 1 September with security measures beefed up and internet restrictions put in place citing law and order situation.
In a series of tweets on 4 and 5 September, Mufti had condemned the restrictions in place.
Earlier on Sunday, 5 September, the J&K police had filed a case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) after videos showing Geelani's body wrapped in Pakistan's flag had surfaced.
Following allegations by his sons Naseem and Nayeem Geelani that the police had not allowed them to bury him but had taken his body into their custody, the Kashmir police tweeted the videos of his burial and issued a statement on Monday alleging that his sons refused to attend the burial because of "Pakistani agenda."
The police said that Kashmir Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar along with other senior officers had met Geelani's family at their residence to offer condolences and requested them to bury him in the night to avoid any law and order situation.
The police further said that the refusal of both of Geelani's sons to go to the graveyard "indicated their loyalty to Pakistani agenda."
