Former UP CM Kalyan Singh Passes Away, PM Modi Tweets Tribute

He was previously reported to be in critical condition.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) Kalyan Singh breathed his last on Saturday, 21 August. He was 89 years old, and was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow since 4 July.

“I am saddened beyond words,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tribute to the leader.

The hospital, in a statement, said that the cause of his demise was sepsis and multi organ failure.

"Former Uttar Pradesh CM and former Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh passes away at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow, due to sepsis and multi organ failure."

Born in 1932, in Atrauli, a small town 25 km from UP’s Aligarh; Kalyan Singh served several terms as an MLA from Atrauli. Through the course of his political career, he also went on to serve two terms as the chief minister of his state, and was also appointed the governor of Rajasthan.

PM Modi Mourns Kalyan Singh’s Death

PM Modi, in a series of tweet, mourned the BJP leader’s death and wrote:

“Kalyan Singh Ji…statesman, veteran administrator, grassroots level leader and great human. He leaves behind an indelible contribution towards the development of Uttar Pradesh..”
He was previously reported to be in critical condition.

A three-day state mourning has been announced in Uttar Pradesh in the aftermath of Kalyan Singh’s demise. The cremation will take place on 23 August at Ganga ghat in UP’s Narora.
