Next time you have any questions about gay issues, make sure you don’t ask Siri’s Russian version on your iPhone. It looks like Apple’s personal digital assistant was programmed by someone who is homophobic.

That’s one lesson a Russian-speaking man called Alex learnt.

Alex had simple queries for Siri like, “are there any gay clubs around me?” Siri answered, “I would have turned red, if I could.”

Here’s what happened when Alex continued to ask her questions:

Alex: “How to register a gay marriage in the UK?”

Siri: (Silence)

Alex: “How to register a gay marriage in the UK?”

Siri: “I will pretend I haven’t heard it.”

Alex, who now lives in London, uploaded the video on YouTube entitled In Soviet Russia Siri questions you.

I was out with friends who’d updated their phones to the latest version of iOS. Russian Siri was one of the new features available. So we made queries using the word ‘gay’ and got very weird replies. We also got similar responses with the word ‘lesbian’.

Apple has claimed it has fixed the bug that caused the problem. But there still hasn’t been any official statement from the company.
