Is It Just Me, or Are Beyoncé’s Pregnancy Pictures Weird?

Saying out loud what everyone is thinking: Beyoncé’s pregnancy pictures are very, very eerie.

Rejoice. The Queen Bey is pregnant. That too with twins. Her Instagram picture has over 9 million likes, and her entire website is flaunting her pregnancy, her grandmother and mother’s pictures and photos and videos from when Beyoncé was pregnant with her first, Blue Ivy.

But, doesn’t something feel amiss? Beyoncé has every right to flaunt her pregnancy, but the pictures are unusual. And not in the good sense. The pictures seem foreboding, almost ominous in a way.

Teeny Weeny Lil Bits of “Stupid”

Some of them are just plain stupid and a tiny bit dangerous. Queen Bey probably has an entire hospital floor dedicated to her for when her water breaks; but who in their right minds, pregnant with twins, willingly goes underwater, holds their breathe while there is loose fabric floating around for a picture? Am I the only one who is worried that if she doesn’t drown, she’ll probably strangle herself with all that loose fabric floating around her chest?

Small Amounts of “Absurd”

There is a reason I keep referring to Beyoncé as Queen Bey because she Run The World (Girls!). However, some of these images are absurd. Somehow, they portray her as the matriarch of some weird, religious cult.

Is this because she’s trying to recreate age-old works of art, such as the 15th-century Sandro Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’, with Blue Ivy posing as Cupid? Personally, I feel that instead of stunning, some of them are horribly awry - with her blankly looking into the distance with a void in her eyes. Where is that glorified maternal glow on her face? Where is the look of happiness of bringing life into this world? Why isn’t she smiling or laughing in any of these images? And most importantly, where is Jay Z?

Oodles of “Fake”

No. I’m not saying that this is a fake pregnancy. What is fake is her hair, her makeup, and her surroundings. There is a fine line between having a natural, ‘untouched-by-the-world’s-wickedness’ look and a religious fanatic. Unfortunately, she has blurred the line between the two. The look she’s probably going for is that of a pagan goddess, but she ends up looking like a brainwashed woman in a cult that is about to commit mass-suicide. The black-and-white images look grotesque and Blue Ivy looks bizarre.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure a lot of women want to document their pregnancies, and rightfully so. But it is also a commercial business, buying fabulous clothes, hiring makeup artists, a high profile photographer, a studio/venue for the shoot and so on. Beyoncé can afford all of that, so why shouldn’t she go ahead with documenting her pregnancy with flair. Maybe, she could have done it a bit differently.

And then, there is this.
