Theodore Roosevelt was vice-president when he unexpectedly became the 26th President of the United States in September 1901, following the death of his predecessor, William McKinley. Roosevelt was young and robust, and brought fresh energy to the White House.

He won the Nobel Prize in 1906 for his efforts to end the Russo-Japanese war and spearheading the construction of the Panama Canal.

Roosevelt is often called one of the greatest US Presidents, and his face adorns Mount Rushmore alongside the faces of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Here’s remembering the dashing personality on his 157th birth anniversary.
