Sikkim’s first airport, and India’s 100th, the Pakyong Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, 24 September.

The airport has been built at a height of 4,500 feet in inhospitable terrain and is being hailed as an engineering wonder.

The airport is located 30km from Sikkim’s capital, Gangtok. It puts the North-Eastern state on the aviation radar, improving connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Sikkim on Sunday, 23 September, a senior official has said.

The official Twitter account of the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted some pictures of the new airport.
