Anurag Singh Thakur, Member of Parliament and President of Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly been commissioned into the Territorial Army (TA).

He was appointed in the rank of Lieutenant in a ‘Commissioning’ ceremony held at the South Block on Raisina Hill, in the presence of military dignitaries and members of his family.

The TA, a wing of the Indian Army, is composed of volunteers who are required to train two months in a year, though their actual role is during national emergencies and wars.

In the past, politicians and eminent personalities have been appointed to the TA’s ranks. Kapil Dev joined as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2008, and Sachin Pilot joined as a Lieutenant in 2012. He is often referred to as Lieutenant Pilot.

Indian cricket team’s captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was also appointed as an honorary Lieutenant Colonel.
