There are many cities across the world that share their names with the cities in India. Here are some places from around the world which share their names with the popular Indian cities.

1. Delhi

Delhi, the capital city of India, shares its same name with a town in Richland Parish of Louisiana, United States.

While the Indian city of Delhi which boasts of a culturally rich heritage with Mughal-era forts and sprawling mosques, has a large number of population, the US town of Delhi, according to the United States Census Bureau, has a total area of 2.6 square miles and an elevation of 89 ft. The total population of the town was 3,289 as per the 2010 census figures.

2. Lucknow

The capital city of Uttar Pradesh which is also known as the city of Nawabs, and is famous for its Kebabs and Imambaras, has the same name as a community in Dauphin County of Pennsylvania, United States.

Lucknow or Castle in the Clouds, United States is a sixteen-room and 5,500-acre mountain estate mansion whose Indian namesake holds the glorious past of being home to actual royalty.

3. Calcutta

Calcutta (now Kolkata), is the capital city of West Bengal which shares its name with a rural town situated in Ohio, United States.

The Indian city of Calcutta, which is also home to ‘Mother House’ founded by Mother Teresa, is known for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries and cultural festivals.

On the other hand, the rural town of Calcutta which is situated in Southeastern Columbiana County of Ohio is also called 'Foulkstown' (named after William Foulks who built the first brick house there).

4. Hyderabad

Hyderabad, the capital of India's Telangana state is a major center for information technology. The city boasts of many historic sites including Golconda Fort and the Charminar.

The other Hyderabad, located 140 kilometers east of Karachi, is the second largest city in the Sindh province (in terms of population) of Pakistan. The city has been named after Ali, a cousin of Prophet Muhammad.

Both the cities share a rich history of a royal past.

5. Patna

The capital city of Bihar shares its name with a lush green village in East Ayrshire of Scotland, United Kingdom.

The ancient Indian city, which sprawls along the Ganges river in the state of Bihar is home to several museums. On the other hand, the Scottish village of Patna was founded back in early 1800s by William Fullarton, who was born in Bihar's Patna, according to a Times of India report.

6. Thane

The Indian city of Thane, which is also known as the 'City of Lakes', is situated in the state of Maharashtra. The city has some beautiful temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The other Thane is a town located in the Southern Down Region of Queensland, Australia. There is no clarity on how the town got its name.

7. Salem

Situated on the banks of Thiru Manimuthar river, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Salem is a city that boasts of centuries-old Sugavanseswarar Swamy temple and a colonial-era Christ Church.

The coastal city of Salem, on the other hand, is situated in the Essex County of Massachusetts, United States. The historical US city is home to the House of Seven Gables, Salem State University, the headquarters of the Satanic Temple, and the Peabody Essex Museum.
