Shoppers at Select City Walk mall in Saket, New Delhi were in for a beautiful visual treat, one evening. A bunch of people dressed in their dancing finery performed to welcome the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in Delhi.
Walking among everyone else, almost as if nothing is amiss, the group suddenly broke into dance as the music chimed in.
Merging the traditional classical form with Bollywood-style and b-boying, they danced to the tunes of traditional south Indian music.
The dancer were recreating Raja Ravi Varma’s lesser-known painting, A Portrait of the Family.
The South Indian music in the flash mob was a tribute to Varma’s Malayali roots. Varma, was born in Travancore in 1948. He is known for his painting inspired by the Ramayana and Mahabharata. He was one of the earliest adopters of Western art techniques, for which he was severely criticised during his lifetime. Posthumously, he is regarded as a modern Indian master.
