Age brings with it two Ws: wisdom and wrinkles. Wisdom is totally welcome but not wrinkles because no one wears saggy, droopy better than a dog.

Have you been avoiding looking at the mirror for the fear of spotting crow feet and fine lines on your former-perfect face? Aww... Too bad you can’t wear Instagram filters in public! But if you don’t fall into the ‘gotto get my botox jab’ category, then keep calm and follow our tips to reverse the ageing process.

Hahaha, kidding.

No one can reverse the clock, but from sitting to sipping, everything plays a role in how you wrinkle and with simple changes you can surely delay how soon those lines will appear and how severe they will be.

1. You Multi-task

If your to-do memo never gets shorter, then the stress may be taking a toll on both your mind and skin. A 2012 report in medical journal PLoS ONE found that just one week of work stress can harm the DNA strands that protect chromosomes. Shortened chromosomes are linked to heart diseases, diabetes and ageing. So instead of trying to do it all, concentrate on one tiny task and then move on.

2. You Love Sugar

With all the negative press, sugar has been getting off late, here’s decoding its beauty ramifications. When you take a bite of that chocolate excess, the sugar molecules bind themselves to the protein fibers of your skin in each cell. The harmful new molecules in the bloodstream can damage the collagen which keeps the skin taut and firm.

So from now on, pass on the sugary treat if you want to maintain the youthful glow!

3. You Think Sunscreen is Optional

Running errands, driving, walking might do more damage to your skin than spending a day at the beach if you do it sans sunblock (Photo courtesy: Tumblr/@GBay)

The worst culprits for ageing skin are sunbathing and tanning. Besides the heightened risk of cancer, excessive UV ray exposure can damage your skin and blood cells. But no one can avoid the sun (and you shouldn’t if you want Vitamin D), so dermatologists suggest daily slathering on a good quality sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

To get the maximum benefits from the sunscreen apply it every three hours, especially if you’re out in the heat for long.

4. Alcohol is Your Poison

Alcohol is a natural diuretic, so the more you drink, the more dehydrated you become. And it doesn’t just sap your body of its natural moisture, it can trigger sagging skin, dullness, acne, wrinkles, all of which make you look older.

We’re not telling you to go off alcohol completely but cut down on the consumption, so your liver doesn’t have to work in overdrive mode to flush out the toxins from your system.

5. Wrong Make-up Moves

We all have that one friend who’s just one brush stroke away from looking like a full-on-clown. Besides making your face resemble a toddler’s colouring book, here’s an alarming reason to go easy with the lippers and mascaras: wearing too much make-up will result in more than just a pancake face.

The thick foundation, concealers can settle into the wrinkles around your eyes and mouth, accentuating fine lines. So swap any heavy make-up with a tinted moisturiser, incorporate a no-fuss skin care routine which includes a good under eye cream, never ever sleep with make-up on because that will clog your pores and totally ruin your skin.

6. You’re Sleeping Wrong

Sleep is important. If you don’t sleep at least 7 to 8 hours a day, you are not giving your body enough time to renew itself, pump out the hormones which revitalise the skin. But if you are constantly sleeping on your tummy with your face smashed into the pillow, it can create wrinkles and make them permanent. So don’t sleep on the same side of your face night after night and invest in luxurious satin pillow covers to keep the skin smooth.

7. Of course You Smoke

However bad you thought smoking was, it’s even worse.

If you are a smoker, there are plenty of reasons you should quit smoking which have nothing to do with vanity, but I’m happy to pile on to that list: smoking makes you look older than your age, gives you tainted teeth and patchy, dull skin. The nicotine restricts blood flow to the skin, making it tough for the cells to breathe oxygen and nutrients they need to stay healthy and regenerate.
