On World Bipolar Day, it is essential that more people understand what the condition actually is, instead of making light of the situation. With an estimated 8.7 million people in India diagnosed as bipolar, the need for effective system to facilitate a better quality of life among them is urgent.

Sandhya Menon, a journalist-turned-writer and a single mother based in Bangalore, decided to take to Twitter to share her experience to help others. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD) six years ago, and since then, has been vocal in her advocacy for awareness of mental illness.

From ending in unemployment to suicide, lack of awareness, acceptance and access to treatment for bipolar disorder is a conversation that needs to be kept alive.
