Fact-Check: Viral Message Claims Exercise Can Tackle COVID-19 


A video showing 7 types of lymphatic exercises is being forwarded on WhatsApp, with a message that claims, "This video is of a Doctor from Kerala who successfully tackled COVID-19 cases. She is giving very simple exercises for the LYMPHATIC SYSTEM to boost the immunity of the body which is the sole requirement at the moment to combat the virus. It takes only 10 - 15 minutes which can be included in our daily routine for effective healthy life style."


Does The Video Claim To Treat The Coronavirus Infection?

This video comes from the Art of Living centre, so FIT approached them to find out more.

The expert in the video does not claim to treat or tackle COVID-19 with the set of exercises mentioned.

When approached, the AOL representative said that the message that has been passed along with the video is fake and not attributable to The Art of Living.

Association of the message with the video from the Art of Living is misleading and unverified. The expert in the video isn’t from Kerala. We have no information about the doctor from Kerala who is mentioned in the forwarded text.

Experts' Opinion On Exercising For Immunity

After watching this video, Dr Shreyas Katharani, Head of Physiotherapy Department at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, responded to FIT, “All the 7 exercises mentioned in the video are useful to improve/maintain the joint mobility and muscle properties. It helps in maintaining lung capacities and volumes. But these exercises are not scientifically proven to keep the lymphatic system functioning and flowing well."

In general, exercises of all kinds will help all your body systems like the respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, lymphatic and others. But we cannot exactly say that only these exercises will help the lymphatic system.

The immune system is made up of specialised organs, cells and chemicals. White blood cells (WBC’s), antibodies, lymphatic system, spleen, thymus and bone marrow are the main parts of the immune system, which fight against infections or microbes, and it is important for all of them to work well.

To function well, the immune system requires balance and harmony. For now, there are no scientifically proven direct links between lifestyle and enhanced immune function. There is still much that researchers don't know about the intricacies and interconnectedness of the immune response.

Experts say that how our body’s immune system reacts to any infection is very complex, and depends on many factors which are not under our control.

According to Harvard Medical School, regular exercise is one of the pillars of healthy living. Exercise can contribute to general good health and therefore to a healthy immune system. It may contribute even more directly by promoting good circulation, which allows the cells and substances of the immune system to move through the body freely and do their job efficiently.

Every system in our body, including our immune system, functions well when it follows a healthy lifestyle that entails non-smoking, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, exercising daily, controlling weight, and getting enough sleep. This includes taking necessary measures (eg washing hands and cleaning) to avoid infections and also reducing our stress levels.

On the other hand, taking care of hand and respiratory hygiene, use of masks and physical distancing, are also important to avoid infection in this period. If you have contracted the coronavirus infection, it is necessary to timely identify, isolate and seek treatment from a doctor.
