Summer has hit rather early, and it’s been rather brutal. Phalodi, in Rajasthan, reached a record breaking 51 degrees last week. Already, several hundred people have died.

So it’s a good time to think about taking care of yourself this summer. Here are some ways you can keep yourself healthy for the coming months.

Drink Loads

This one is pretty obvious, but it’s important to remember. Make sure you’ve got lots of fluids in you.

Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Salt

This clam has the right idea. Be like this clam.

When you sweat a lot, you lose crucial salts and minerals your body relies on. It’s a good idea to make sure you’re replenishing these salts. Don’t over do it, though, because too much salt can have other negative effects.

Cut Down on the Drinks

There’s nothing like cracking open a beer on a hot day and taking that first, refreshing sip. Sadly, this isn’t the time to do it.

Alcohol makes you dehydrated and you want to avoid getting dehydrated over the summer. Same goes for caffeine, but we know cutting down on either of these vital liquids can be hard.

Watch Your Meals

This isn’t the time to be stuffing your face. It’s actually better to eat smaller meals, but eat more frequently when the heat hits, according to the Red Cross. The organisation also recommends cutting down on high protein meals because they can increase metabolic heat.

Schedule Things For Later

Admittedly, this one may not always sit well with your boss. But if you have the luxury of getting to choose when and where you do things, try to make plans in the evening, when temperatures are slightly lower, or in the morning before things really heat up.

Keep It Light

Say no to jeans. You definitely want to wear lighter clothes so you can cool off more quickly.

It’s hot, we know. But it will be over in a few months... right?

Good luck out there. Peace out.
