The carmaker with the largest portfolio of cars in India is back with yet another launch. This time it is two special cars from Mercedes-Benz India - the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R and AMG GT Roadster.

These AMG GT Roadster and GT R sports cars are equipped with 4-litre, twin-turbo V8 petrol engines. In the AMG GT R sports coupe, the motor puts out a range-topping 585 bhp and 700Nm of torque with a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

All that power goes to the rear-wheels only, unlike the Nissan GT-R which is all-wheel drive. This layout is similar to the Mercedes GT-S, which is already on sale in India.

The Mercedes AMG GT Roadster has the same mechanical layout as the AMG GT R, but has slightly lower power, and of course, the convertible design. It puts out 470 bhp and 630 Nm of torque.

The AMG GT R can do the 0-100 kmph sprint in a claimed 3.6 seconds (that's about 0.2 seconds faster than the stock Nissan GT-R's figures). Mercedes also recently set the record for the fastest lap by a production car at the 5.127 Km long Buddh International Circuit.

The car did the lap in just 2 minutes, 9.8 seconds. It was driving by professional AMG driver Christian Hohenadel. The earlier record was held by the Mercedes SLS AMG which did it about 5 seconds slower.

What's special about the Mercedes AMG GT R and Roadster is that besides having a rear-wheel drive only layout, they also feature rear-wheel steering, which helps in sharper handling and cornering.

In terms of features, the Mercedes AMG GT R is loaded with everything the enthusiast would need. It runs on 20-inch wheels with fat 275 mm width tyres up front and even fatter 325 mm wheels at the rear. It has large carbon-ceramic disc brakes all around. Mercedes has used plenty of carbon-fibre panels and bracing to reduce weight, making it lighter than the GT S.

It features dual-zone climate control for its two occupants, Mercedes Burmeister infotainment system pumping out 1,000 watts of music and a variety of drive modes to suit the mood - all fast anyway.
