Kieran Veitz was born with a rare condition where her heart was outside of her chest. This frightening case was brought to the doctor's notice when her mother Caitlin went for a routine pregnancy check-up at 20 weeks in November 2014.
The fatal condition, called ectopia cordis, occurs in just 1 out of 1,00,000 births and can lead to death or termination of a pregnancy.
Kieran's case was even more terrifying as her liver was also outside her body.
Her parents immediately met with doctors to rule out others anomalies like Down Syndrome. If these defects were mild, her chances of survival would be high.
A team of 60 doctors then came to rescue by delivering her safely and then operating upon her. Her heart was then successfully put back in her body.
Though she will need more surgeries in future but is healthy at 20 months.
