Nearly a week after he was left briefly in a forest by his parents as a part of punishment, Yamato Tanooka was found safe-and-sound at a military facility by Japanese Self-Defence Force soldiers early on Friday.

The seven-year-old was left in a forest on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido by his parents who were trying to teach him a lesson for misbehaving and throwing rocks.

They couldn’t find him when they returned several minutes later.

Yamato’s disappearance sparked a six day manhunt and his safe return was welcomed by a nation riveted by his disappearance.

The debate has triggered a debate on parental discipline in Japan.
