Odisha Hospital Fire: Government Orders High-Level Probe

At least 20 people have died and several others have been injured in a fire that broke out at the SUM hospital, a private facility in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar late on Monday.

Rushing to the spot late on Monday night, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced that his government would offer complete financial assistance to those injured. He has also ordered a high-level probe into the matter. Additionally, the government has decided to ramp up fire-safety checks on hospitals in the state.

According to initial reports, the fire started in the ICU before spreading to other parts of the private health-care facility. While some managed to jump to safety, many others, mostly patients confined to web of medical equipments were left behind.
