On Thursday night, the Nice truck attack in France at a Bastille Day celebration shook the whole world.

84 people were killed, while over 200 were injured when a man ran over a crowd at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.

The attacker, identified as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, was shot and killed by the police.

This isn’t the first instance where France has been the target of an attack. Though it is not known if the attack had terror motives, France and the larger continent of Europe is reeling under a slew of attacks.

In a Facebook live with Ajai Sahni, Executive Director at The Institute of Conflict Management, The Quint asks why France seems to be the target of such attacks.

Here are the 5 biggest points Sahni made in our conversation with him:

  • It’s not just a French phenomenon, it’s happening all over Europe.

  • People are getting disillusioned with democratic ideals, and turning to the ideologies that are being given to them as alternatives.

  • Europe needs to look at a strategy of counter-terrorism more seriously. When there was violence in other parts of the world, it was fine, but when it began in Europe, it became an issue.

  • One of the reasons why India is not as affected as Europe by ISIS recruiters is that nobody in India can stand and make speeches in public, asking people to “Join the revolution”.

  • It’s important to take measures but we cannot live in a state of constant fear. People are more likely to die of other reasons, than in a terror attack.
