A military solution cannot be the political solution to the Kashmir conflict, senior BJP leader and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha said, in an exclusive chat with The Quint.

Amid the escalating tensions in the state, the former external affairs minister spoke at length to The Quint’s editorial director Sanjay Pugalia about the effectiveness of the BJP government’s strategy in Kashmir.

On ‘Supari Journalism’

Commenting on the media coverage of India’s position on Pakistan and China, Sinha warned about the dangers of media outlets that engage in ‘supari journalism’ – a term he used to refer to news outlets that “pay ultranationalists to come and scream on television”. These ultranationalists are the biggest “desh drohis” he said.

When asked about his thoughts on the ruling party’s claims of development, Sinha said that these can only be verified by residents of urban slums and rural areas.

On NPAs

When asked about the persisting problem of Non Performing Assets (NPAs), Sinha said that he doesn’t believe that the problem will be solved this year. He questioned why, if NPAs are such a burden on RBI, the government is not stepping in.
