A group of women belonging to a self-help group were lathi-charged by the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad, after they staged a massive protest against the banks on Wednesday. They were gathered outside the micro-finance institutions to pay their EMIs when chaos broke out and police resorted to caning the crowd.

The women had been hit by the recent demonetisation drive and were unable to pay up monthly installments against loans that they had taken from a bunch of micro-finance institutions. The banks, however, refused to budge and demanded that all pending installments be paid by 20 November itself.

Miffed with the bank’s inconsiderate attitude, the women then thronged the streets, and were lathicharged by the police. Frayed tempers in the area also led to a police van being vandalised, allegedly by the same group of women.

With no money to treat ailing children, many are now demanding that their loans be waived off.
