Students from villages in Uttarkhand’s Chamoli district have been risking their lives to go to school. The students have been forced to make use of ropes and makeshift ladders after a part of the bridge over the Chuflagad river was washed away when heavy rain lashed the region.
The students have to wake up as early as 5 am so they can reach the bridge by 6 am. They then cross the swollen Chuflagad river, one by one, using ropes and ladders. Students also climb a hillock on their way to school.
"A part of the bridge over the river has been washed away. We have placed a ladder to help the students cross over. We have to help one child at a time to cross over,” said a resident.
