The Supreme Court on 22 August struck down the validity of Triple Talaq with a 3:2 majority. A bench comprising five judges, headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar, had reserved its verdict on 18 May, six days after the hearing began on 11 May.
The SC bench declared the practice “un-Islamic, retrograde, unworthy” and said that it “violates right to equality”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the SC’s decision on Triple Talaq and called it a move that grants equality to Muslim women.

A batch of PILs were seeking a ban on the practices of Triple Talaq, Nikah Halala and polygamy. One of the PILs was filed by Shayara Bano, a woman who was given triple talaq by her husband. The other was filed by a Muslim women’s organisation called the Bhartiya Mahila Muslim Andolan (BMMA).

The two warring factions of the AIADMK, led by O Panneerselvam and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswami respectively, were reunited on 21 August, six months after the party split following the death of former TN Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
Nineteen MLAs, pledging support to ousted AIADMK Deputy General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran, met Governor Vidyasagar Rao on Tuesday, and informed him of their decision to withdraw support to TN Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami.
What this means is that as per convention, the Governor will have to call for a floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

All roads inside the state-run Lok Nayak Hospital in New Delhi's Daryaganj lead to the Drinking Water Pumping Station, tucked in the farthest corner of the hospital.
The security guard sitting outside the station gate said that on a regular day, this would be the most innocuous part of the hospital. But 20 August, he said, was unlike any other day.
From policemen to hospital authorities, government officials, and social activists, everybody inside the station complex was waiting for the body of Rishi Pal, the 45-year-old sanitation worker who lost his life on 20 August.
