Congress President Rahul Gandhi arrived in Kerala's capital Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, 28 August, to visit the flood-hit regions of the state, including Chengannur, Alappuzha and Angamaly.

Visiting the flood-ravaged areas of Kerala, Congress president Rahul Gandhi lauded the fishermen for their efforts in rescuing those affected in the deluge.

The Congress president likened the fishermen community to farmers, stating that their contribution was noteworthy, and that if Congress came to power, a separate ministry for fishermen would be set up.

Gandhi spoke to people at relief camps, on a two-day visit to the state, days after the deadliest deluge hit the state, claiming many lives.

At a reception hosted by the Congress in Alappuzha to honour the fishermen community, Gandhi said the coast guard should make use of the services of fishermen for rescue operations in the future.

I am proud to say that through all your difficulties, through all your hardships, whenever Kerala needed you, you stood up and gave your best. I salute your commitment to the people of Kerala. Three thousand fishermen had saved 70,000 lives in the recent floods.

Along with farmers, fishermen have also helped build the country, Gandhi said, stating that it was an "honour" for him to felicitate the fishermen who had saved several lives.

On 29 August, Gandhi will be visiting the flood-affected areas in Wayanad district.
