Edappadi K Palanisamy was a part of the late J Jayalalithaa’s inner coterie. Just hours after the Supreme Court convicted VK Sasikala in the disproportionate assets case, AIADMK MLAs selected Palanisamy as the leader of the Legislature Party.

The decision comes as Sasikala is now disqualified from contesting elections for a period of 10 years – close to four years of her remaining jail term in the case, and a six-year ban.

Palanisamy who first contested in 1989, had lost an election in 2006. He won the May 2016 elections purely on the money that he was able to get as sanction for the Edappadi municipality for various development works. Click here for more on the man.
