A 16-year-old girl was beaten up repeatedly by a man in Mumbai’s Kurla-Nehru Nagar after she allegedly raised objection when the accused passed comments at her. The teenager was also allegedly molested when the incident took place.

After the incident, the teen was taken to a hospital, where she was found to have suffered a nose fracture, a police official said.

Meanwhile, the locals remained mute spectators when the incident took place, the police said.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, 17 October, was caught on CCTV camera. The footage, which has gone viral on social and mainstream media, shows the man ruthlessly beating up the girl, following which she falls unconscious amidst a crowd of onlookers who do not intervene.

The accused has been identified as 19-year-old Imran Shahid Shaikh. According to her statement, the girl was on her way to her tuition class when the accused, along with others seated inside an auto-rickshaw, began to pass comments. When she protested, she said the accused beat her up.

The teenager said the accused had passed inappropriate comments at her before and that at the time, her sister had complained to his mother about the incident.

He did pass comments once before. I informed my family about this. My sister went to complain about this to his mother. His mother told her ‘nobody is innocent’.

The accused was arrested on the day of the incident, but was later granted bail by a local court, the police said. “On the complaint of a victim, police had registered an offence against the man and arrest was made accordingly. Next day he was produced before the court and released on bail,” Pramod Khoparde, senior police inspector of Nehru Nagar police station said.

The case had been filed at the Nehru Nagar police station under IPC sections 324 ( voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation).

“We have called the girl to record further statement in this case. If some new facts surface, charges will be added against the accused. As of now girl has not come to the police station,” the inspector said.

However, when asked whether the violence broke out over eve-teasing, Khoparde said the girl did not mention any such incident in her complaint.

According to reports, the accused and his relative threatened the girl over her complaint. But, no fresh complaint in this regard was received in the last three days. Further probe is underway, an official said.
