The town of Mathura has been simmering with anger after two bullion traders were shot by six armed robbers, who escaped with gold worth Rs 4 crore on Monday evening. In another incident, a jeweller was shot at in Agra and valuables worth Rs 8 lakh looted.

Six armed men came on motorbikes, barged into the jewellery shops in the market in Mathura – falling under Kotwali police station limits – and opened fire, police said.

Two persons, identified as Vikas and Megh, were killed in the attack, while two others were injured and have been hospitalised, Senior Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar Mishra informed. He also said that eight teams had been formed to crack the case and nab the culprits.

Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Prateek Kumar and two constables have been suspended for the incident.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly also witnessed an uproar on Tuesday with the opposition raising the matter of the killings and alleging that law and order had collapsed in the state under the Yogi Adityanath government.

DGP Uttar Pradesh Sulkhan Singh and state Power Minister Srikant Sharma are scheduled to visit Mathura on Wednesday to assess the law and order situation.
