Dead Fish Wash Up in China’s Polluted Hongze Lake
Thousands of fish and other marine life have washed up dead due to pollution in Hongze Lake of China’s Suqian city.

Thousands of fish and other marine life have washed up dead due to pollution in Hongze Lake of China’s Suqian city. Fishermen are using nets to catch the dead fish and crabs that have floated on to the surface of the lake and piling them on their boats.
Black, foul-smelling water from upstream reportedly entered the lake, polluting it and killing off the marine life. The incident has also caused severe losses to farmers. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of pollution and the death of marine life.
Similar incidents have occurred in China before. Thousands of fish were killed by pollutants from a factory in China’s Hubei province in 2013. In 2016, 35 tonnes of fish washed up dead in the country’s Hainan province. Locals alleged that the fishes had died due to pollution while the authorities said the cause of death was a change in the water’s salinity levels.
