Denis Shapovalov attempted to hit a ball high into the crowd, but instead hit umpire Arnaud Gabas on the face.
Great Britain advanced to the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup World Group in dramatic fashion on Sunday after Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov defaulted for striking a ball at the umpire.
Shapovalov was serving at 2-1 down in the third set after losing the first two to Kyle Edmund 6-3, 6-4. After sending a forehand wide, Shapovalov attempted to hit a ball high into the crowd, but instead watched in horror as it hit umpire Arnaud Gabas in the face.
Gabas called for medical attention and soon applied an ice pack to his face. Shapovalov was visibly shocked, but tie referee Brian Earley had no choice but to rule a default, leaving Britain the winners. 2015 winners Britain next face France in the quarter-finals in April.
