The Indian Army on Tuesday, 25 September, paid tributes to Lance Naik Sandeep Singh, who lost his life along the Line of Control (LoC) on Monday during an anti-infiltration operation.
As a gunfight broke out in the Tangdhar sector in north Kashmir's Kupwara district, Sandeep Singh sustained bullet injuries and succumbed to them later. The operation also left five terrorists dead.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army refuted several media reports suggesting that Singh had taken part in the surgical strikes in September 2016.
Colonel Rajesh Kalia, the Defence Ministry spokesperson, told IANS in Srinagar that reports about Lance Naik Sandeep Singh being a member of the Army's Special Forces that took part in the September 2016 Surgical Strike are "unfounded".
After the ceremony by the Indian Army at Badami Bagh cantonment in Jammu and Kashmir, Singh’s remains were brought to his village in Punjab’s Gurdaspur.
Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Dilbag Singh and representatives from various security agencies were present at the ceremony.
Army chief Bipin Rawat offered condolences to his family and acknowledged Sandeep’s sacrifice.
Colonel Kuljinder Singh said his death was a “great loss” for the country.
The 30-year-old is survived by his wife and a five-year-old son and had joined army in 2007.
