Acid Thrown at Woman in UP’s Sambhal, Police Probe Dowry Charges

The acid-attack survivor claims that her husband had abused her for a long time over demands for dowry.

A 27-year-old woman was attacked by two bike-borne men in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district on Monday. Family members of the woman allege that her estranged husband had thrown acid on her while she was returning from a nearby temple. Speaking to the news agency ANI, the woman, who suffered burns on her legs and hands,, claimed that the accused would frequently beat her up over demands for dowry. She also claimed to have been forced out of her husband’s house around four months ago.

An FIR has been filed against the woman’s husband and police have assured a strong investigation into the matter.

On 21 April 2015. the then Minister of State for Home Haribhai Chaudhary also told Lok Sabha that Uttar Pradesh had recorded the highest number of acid attack cases among all states in India. 186 such incidents were reported from the state out of the 310 cases registered across the country in 2014.
