Google’s rumoured launch of digital payment service called Tez in India has been all but confirmed.

And guess who’s the source of the launch? It’s none other than Ministry of Finance, who tweeted revealing Arun Jaitley, the Finance Minister of India, will be launching the product.

While Google might have liked the information to be kept behind closed doors for now, a recent report from The Ken, and now this tweet, does confirm the launch.

The fact that Google has managed to rope in the counry’s Finance Minister for the event will be seen as a big coup for the giant.

The imminent launch of Tez also indicates why Google hadn’t introduced Android Pay in India till now.

In addition to pushing UPI across the country, the Indian government is keen on global brands like Google, WhatsApp to work on products, that are tailor-made for the market.

And by the looks of it, and Google’s very straight message on the invite for the event, it seems that the plan is slowly but surely coming to fruition.

We still don’t know how Google plans to Indianise the Tez app, and most importantly, have they managed to crack the code for digital payments to work sans internet on feature phones.

We’ll get more details on Monday, when the product is officially announced.
