Zomato and Swiggy might have to contend with Facebook in the online food delivery business very soon. The social networking giant is the latest to rollout an ‘Order Food’ feature to its users in the US for Android, iOS and even desktop.

The online food space has gradually picked up pace around the world, which also has players like Uber Eats (via Uber) and Food Panda among others right now.

Facebook is integrating this feature to its existing set of restaurant pages, where you can not only view the menu, you can reserve a table for lunch or dinner as well.

Apparently, Facebook had been testing this feature since last year and after responding to feedback and adding more partners, the platform has been made available to users in the US for now, with a global rollout in the coming months.

As to how the food ordering feature will work on the Facebook app or web version. Here’s what Facebook highlighted.

Users can browse restaurants nearby by visiting the ‘Order Food’ section in the ‘Explore’ menu. Browse for food options and select ‘Start Order’ for takeout or delivery services.

It makes total sense for Facebook to enter the food arena, especially when it has over 1 billion users globally. This could help them integrate their in-house payment mechanism, which could link up with other Facebook products like WhatsApp and Instagram as well.
