With the election trends becoming clear in the five states – Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa – The Quint spoke to political analyst Sanjay Kumar and Swaraj Abhiyan’s Yogendra Yadav.

Here are the key takeaways from the live:

  • With BJP sweeping the Uttar Pradesh elections, it seems like there has been a repetition of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. It would be unfair to talk about a particular sect or religious community voting for the BJP, because it’s clear that they have got votes regardless of caste and class barriers.
  • BJP’s victory in Uttar Pradesh is unprecedented. The wave that washed over the country in 2014 is still alive in 2017. Demonetisation has clearly not had any negative impact on Prime Minister Modi. National politics and stability is in favour of the BJP.
  • In Punjab, it’s not Congress’ victory as much as it is Captain Amarinder Singh’s. All those standing in opposition to Modi should realise what BJP’s victory in these states means and analyse it.
