Golf is a rich man’s sport. The equipment is expensive and the membership at clubs difficult to obtain – not to mention expensive. But when there is a will, there usually, almost always is – a way.

For 10-year-old Shubham Jaglan, therefore – son of a milkman and resident of a remote village in Haryana – it was unimaginable that he’d get to play a sport so elite that often better-off children from cities can’t manage it. But Shubham did.

When I was five years old, an NRI had opened a golf academy in my village and my grandfather enrolled me there. He said that there are too many wrestlers in the family – it’ll be nice to have a golfer. But the academy shut down soon after. I continued to practise playing golf in crop fields. 60% of what I know is from watching You Tube golf videos.

The 10-year-old this morning added another feather to his cap as he created history after winning the IJGA World Stars of Junior Golf event in Las Vegas.

You’ll know more about Subham’s struggle and his heart-warming story when you watch this episode of Satyamev Jayate – a show hosted by Bollywood actor Aamir Khan. Subham appeared on the show last year, during its third season.

The snippets below – pictures of Subham, both at his home and during his moment of victory – speak volumes of his humble origins. There is also an image with his mother – as also a particularly delightful one of the golf prodigy smiling as he heads for international shores. There’s little in short, that can deter you from rooting for this boy!
