Going into the World Cup, senior batsman Shoaib Malik will certainly have the additional responsibility of passing on his experience to the young players in the Pakistan squad.

But the 37-year old suffered a slight humiliation during their fourth ODI against England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Friday, 17 May.

During the 47th over, Malik while batting at 41, decided to cut the ball on the offside but eventually rattled all three stumps. It was surely one of the most peculiar hit-wicket incidents by a seasoned campaigner such as Malik.

England Cricket posted the video of the incident on their twitter handle, writing, “Don’t’ see this too often!”.

Twitterati were quick to get onto the scene and made sure they didn’t leave any opportunity to laugh out loud on the incident.

Ellyse Perry, an integral member of Australian women’s cricket team also took to Twitter to have her word on the incident.

A week ago, she had retweeted a video of Malik batting in the nets. “I don’t know, why he is going too deep in his crease while playing this shot. I think, that’s not a good sign for such an experienced player.”, Perry had written.

The 28-year old was indeed right as Malik got hit-wicket while attempting the same shot. She was quick to post the screenshot of her retweet on Twitter post Malik’s dismissal.

Before dismissing himself in Mark Wood’s over, Malik scored quickfire 41 off 26 balls.

Pakistan managed to put 340 runs on board in 50 overs, thanks to century from Babar Azam and half centuries from Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Hafeez.

England chased down the target with three balls to go and three wickets in hand. Jason Roy smashed 114 while Ben Stokes scored 71 to wrap up the series for the hosts with a 3-0 lead.

The final ODI will be played at Headingly, Leeds on Sunday, 19 May.
