An inspired bowling performance by the Sri Lankan bowlers led by Nuwan Pradeep and Lasith Malinga saw them win their win their first game in the 2019 World Cup campaign. Sri Lanka came into this match on the back of a loss against New Zealand in their first game in which their performance was criticized.

In this game however, the Lankans turned it around for their team. After starting strong and getting to 92 for the first wicket, three wickets in an over by Mohammad Nabi brought them down from 92 for 1 to 146 for 4.

Rain then played a spoilsport as the match was called to a halt with the Lankans at 188/8 in the 33rd over. When the game restarted, the match was shortened to 41-overs per side as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 201.

Afghanistan were set a revised target of 187 to win. Sri Lankan bowlers kept the pressure as they took wickets at regular intervals. Afghanistan finally were bowled out for 152.

Twitter praised this fightback from Sri Lanka and congratulated them for their victory.

Here’s how they reacted to Sri Lanka’s maiden 2019 World Cup win.
